One of the unfortunate developments in modern society is the need for more protection. There are few things that can put you more off kilter than arriving home to see that your home has been broken into. The frightening images: the door off its hinges, a pried open window, home turned upside down, valuables missing, etc. This unpleasant imagery and the repercussions of the event can take years to sort through and put behind you. The increased frequency of such occurrences is among the main motivations for people having a home security alarm system installed.
When searching for a home security alarm, there are a lot of factors to consider. You might want to save money with a DIY system that you can install yourself, or you might want to look into having a company that specializes in house alarms do all the work for you. Decide how handy you are and if you have the appetite to take on such a project. Also think about how much you are saving versus how much protection you will be receiving.
You will need to inform yourself as to the pros and cons of the different systems. Are you opting for a simple home security alarm system that provides sound, but no security service, or do you want a monitoring system and service that will notify all the respective authorities -- fire, police, ambulance, etc. -- when a given alarm sounds?
As an incentive to install a house alarm, many insurance companies will offer a discount on your home owner’s premium. Check with your insurance company to inquire as to what features your home security alarm system should have to qualify for a discount. Some companies have been known to knock off as much as 25%, depending on the system you install.
If you do opt for the DIY system, be sure that you read up on information from various surveillance companies to check out the systems that they use. Some of the systems are wireless, PC based with packaged cameras and software, whereas others are hard-wired with a separate control mechanism. The prices vary as much as does the degree of protection.
The old fashioned house alarm has too many drawbacks to mention. With how sophisticated burglars have become, a loud noise only is not apt to scare them away or dissuade them from entering the premises. You are better off installing a more complete system that will prevent intruder entry or assist in capturing the perpetrators.
A truly expert company will be able to guide you with exactness as to where and how the cameras should be installed so as to have maximum coverage. You can consult with several of them before installing your own home security alarm system, or compare prices and services and contract the one that makes the most sense to you.
A good bit of advice is to steer clear of anything "free." If you are tempted to take advantage of a company's promotion of a free system, you should understand that, in most cases, this will be a bare bones system that is designed to later get you to acquiesce to additional set up and activation fees. Furthermore, the house alarm system itself will, by and large, give you inadequate protection.
Again, do your homework before you venture into the world of home protection. Remember, a home security alarm that is neither secure nor alarming to a would-be intruder is no protection at all.
